DVD notworking, CD's only,

HI dears. my laptop is not able to read/ write any DVDs, only CD's
I tried external USB drive but had the same problem, o it is nothte drive,
ideas?

So no matter which DVD you put in, it doesn't get recognized in windows explorer? or is just being unable to play dvd movies?

the explorer can see the drive but not the contents,
acutally I'm trying to burn a new DVD ( my data back ).

I replaced the drive and had the same problem, I used external device, also had the same.

is there some software or driver required? Im using XP Pack 3

If I recall correctly XP does not record directly on a DVD, try using Nero Express or UltraISO to burn a data dvd.

Dears , it is me again

I tried to delete the " upper value " key from registery and restarted the laptop, there was an update for windows waiting to be installed..

then I checked the registery after rebooting, it was not deleted but suprisingly the burning worked fine after that.
so I'm not sure which was the reason
