dvd problem

After installing SP 2 on my XP pro machine I cannot write to DVDs.
I can read DVDs, read and write CDs but when I try to write to DVD
I get a "Please insert disk" message.

Roxio's ECDC is installed, version 5.3.5 - and I read somewhere that SP2
blocks the roxio drivers. All I want to do is burn a system restore DVD for
backup purposes for the system, but when I use MS backup I get the same
"insert disk" message. I could buy new burning software but am wondering
if that would solve the problem or if there is a cheaper way to solve this.

Thanks,

Bob

Look for updates at the Roxio website.

Hi Bob -

In addition to Cari's advice to look for updates, you may need to uninstall,
reboot and reinstall your Roxio software.

Thanks for the replies:
I did check for updates and do have the latest roxio updates for version 5.
I also got a hotfix from ms and installed it; and then
I just tried a demo of the newest Nero software and it too reports no disk
when I try to write to a DVD! That fact leads me to wonder about a reinstall
of roxio since Nero should have installed its own drivers, and still the
problem persists.
Further suggestions?

It may be a hardware problem with your DVD writer.

Are you trying to make Windows Backup write to a DVD disk, by
selecting the drive letter as a backup destination?

Yes, I am trying to complete a system backup using a DVD and
a floppy with Windows Automatic System Restore.

I think your last reply gave all of us the answer..
You can write to the CD/DVD otherwise, correct? Meaning if you
write an individual file or folder to the CD/DVD using Roxio or
Nero, this gives you no problem?

Answer inline - at the bottom of the thread (snipped and copied below):

Windows Backup Does Not Back Up to CD-R, CD-RW, or DVD-R Devices

Thanks for the response. The odd thing is I did a backup to a DVD+RW BEFORE
installing SP2 and it worked just fine. The problem persists:

I can read/write to CDs

I can play pre-recorded DVDs

I cannot write to any DVD "Please insert disk" error message.

You may want to consider using http://www.firestreamer.com/fsdvd/. It
allows Windows Backup to write ASR backups directly to DVD with
compression and media spanning.

Hi Bob.

I am having the exact same problem with DVD-RW. I can read DVD and CD roms
and write to CD-r/RW, but when it comes to DVD-R, DVD+R, and DVD-RW I get an
error message.

Did you have any success?

Thanks.
