dvd writer not writing

Only partially correct.

I bought some walmart 700 meg CD-R's. couldn't use Studio to record a TV show
to them. wrong format. found out I needed a DVD-R disk to write TV shows to.
Bought some 4.x gig DVD-R's. I was told they can be used as plain old data
disks also, Tried to write some programs and 2 folders of mp3's under 2 gigs to
the DVD-R because they won't all fit on a 700 meg CD-R.

now it shows 0 bytes and 0 bytes free on the DVD-R's what's going on ?
Tried a second DVD-R same thing 0 bytes total disk space, and 0 bytes free.
I did write 3 half hour shows to a DVD-R the other day with Studio 8. and the
explorer has no trouble writing to CD-R's
I was kind of hoping to be able to use these 4.x gig DVD-R's as data disks also
for those programs that require more than 1 CD-R to keep all the programs in
one place.

The drive itself is a brand new Liteon DVD-R and hasn't shown any problems. I
also upgraded to SP2 this AM.

What are you using to burn data DVDs with?
I use Nero, ISO format. This is not the same as a packet writer like INCD
or DirectCD or XPs native CD packet writer. Does not natively work in
windows explorer, you have to open the application to do this. The media
(Wal-Mart) itself could be the problem. Try a different reseller brand for
the DVD media.

Liteon DVD-R i would rate as fair, longevity not great. With sp2 you can
burn track at once as multisession not being restricted by the 4 gigabyte
limit pre-sp2 on ntfs. Sp2 has fixed the issue of the multisession dvd with
a limit of 4 gigabytes on a ntfs formatted hard drive. Of course before you
could burn 4.7 gigs in one shot. Don't believe the garbage you read on some
of these newsgroups don't use nero use recordnow max the earlier versions of
copytodvd or NTI CD and DVD-Maker Platinum. You're closing the dvd disc the
first time you write to it probably the default option of the software
change it to multisession in options. I've been using vegas 5 or TMPGEnc 3.0
to encode also been using riverpast video cleaner so i can use AC3 sound
instead of paying for the AC3 option in TMPGenc. Been using dvd architect
2.0 to prepare the dvd's and NTI CD and DVD-Maker Platinum to burn them.

If recordnow is going to stick directcd back on my machine I'll pass. 1st
directcd isn't compatible with XP pro. and 2nd it won't remove easily. and 3rd
it screws up CD's when it does attempt to install itself.
I'm not real comfortable with anything roxio anymore. I bought the ATI aiw128
and it came with videowave2. Luckily that thing still works on XP pro. I
intended to upgrade to vw7, but vw7 was a step backwards from vw2.
They couldn't handle my problem with directcd. so I had to dig thru the
registry by hand and remove everything roxio.

cripes isn't there an all in one package that does it all ? As for Nero, the
place that sold me the machine DVD's and drive, said Nero would be the program
to use for data to 4.x gig CD's.
Since I already have it installed I'll most likely go that route.
but the list of software should be useful if Nero becomes too wieldy.

There are versions of nero that don't seem to work properly. The problem is
there are too many versions. Some versions choke on a long file name and
bang a coaster other versions omit a long file name though most names don't
exceed the udf limit. The older versions of CopytoDvd let you write at the
maximum speed of the dvd burner not the speed rating of the dvd disc.

All the programs came back with pretty much the same information.

this above may have screwed me on using the DVD a 2nd time.
Why is it DVD software can't at least attempt to not screw things up.
I had pretty much the same luck with a HP cd / rw. I may have 10-15 workable
cd's from 2-3 years of the hp.

They play, but when it comes to writing they seem to go brain dead.
Even the software that came with the DVD is worthless. You'd think the
manufacturer would at least bundle working software with their machines.

writer worked for a different DVD's disk writing some TV shows, so that tells
me the writer works. and it's been backing up data to blank CD's for awhile.
it's something to do with these DVD's disks I'm using.
