I'm unfamiliar with all the cables and such. I have an old monitor (HP S2031A) and it has a VGA and DVI-D Dual Link connector. I am obviously planning to get a new monitor but not anytime soon. I am building a Gaming PC and my GPU has 2 DVI-D Dual Link connectors. My question is this, will anything bad happen if I connect my old monitor to my GTX 1060? Because I read somewhere to "Use DVI-D Dual Link where high resolutions are required" but my monitor is 1600x900. I'm wondering if any of you can inform me that it is okay to still use DVI-D, thank you.

Solution
Yes a single link cable should work fine on both ends. The GPU probably does have a true dual link port. As I said, my guess is that HP used a dual link port but only connected the pins required for single link connectivity. Using a dual link port just simplifies their parts inventory and ensures the widest range of connectivity.

Hi thanks for the reply, it literally looks like a DVI-D Dual Link, i searched it up and it looks exactly like it. But for your suggestion, would a single link still fit into the monitor and my GPU?
