Basically i have an old monitor with VGA but my processor doesnt allow vga, the monitor has dvi-i output, but my gpu has dvi-d output, if i buy an dvi-i to dvi-i cable it works?

Solution

With dvi, most of the 'pins' are digital data related. The 'spade' is an analog ground. So dvi-d is for all intents and purposes digital signal only as far as video goes. That includes dual link. Dvi-i has the 4x extra pins surrounding the 'spade', those carry the analog rgb 'vga' signals, so dvi-i can be used with either a vga analog or digital monitor.

A dvi-d cable will hook into anything dvi, a dvi-i will only hook into dvi-i/a as those 4 extra pins won't have a port.
