I am trying to upgrade the RAM in this laptop form the current 3 gigs to 8 gigs. Toshiba's manual for it (https://support.dynabook.com/support/staticContentDetail?contentId=3054415&isFromTOCLink=false), Crucial and Kingston says it should take DDR3 PC3-12800 • CL=11 • UNBUFFERED • NON-ECC • DDR3-1600 • 1.35V. I have ordered this RAM from two different places (Crucial CT2KIT51264BF160B) and when I install it, the laptop only gives a flashing rectangular cursor at the top left of the screen. I can go into the BIOS and it shows the installed 8 gigs. It will not boot from either the DVD or the hard drive.

The RAM that came with it is a Samsung M471B2873FHS-CH9 (PC3-10600 DDR3-1333MHz). This must mean that at least on this particular laptop, the faster RAM is not compatible. What would be an upgrade 4 gig module brand and part number that will work with this laptop?

Thanks.

Welcome to the forums, newcomer!

For that laptop, you're going to need DDR3-1333MHz rams or at the very least rams that are made by Elpida which are found on Apple's Macbook's.

You also will need to see if you're on the latest BIOS update for your laptop.

To note, are you trying to mix and match two different ram sticks? Mind sharing a picture of both the rams you want to work with?

Thank you for the reply. I contacted Crucial Tech Support and was told "
Even if the memory is of 1600 MhZ it will clock-down to 1333 if your motherboard supports only 1333 MhZ speed. " I was told to also install one module at a time and start the laptop. I did so and it worked with both modules. Strange why it would not boot before but I will not argue with success.

I kept the laptop for a couple of days and shut it down and power on routine many times and never a glitch.
