Dynamic DNS registration failing for some XP machines

We are running Microsoft Windows 2000 DHCP and DNS at our site. We also have
Windows XP workstations setup to acquire IP addresses through DHCP and
dynamically register their Host (A) resource records with DNS. Note also
that DNS and DHCP are both hosted on the same server.

For several thousand workstations we are having no problems however we have
one group of users where dynamic DNS registration of their Host (A) resource
records has ceased to occur. Although this group of users uses a slightly
different image to build their workstations this image is based on the image
used for the other workstations in the enterprise. We also believe that
dynamic registration was working on their machines 2-3 weeks ago but has
since stopped. We know they can reach the server as they are acquiring an IP
address from DHCP. This same DHCP/DNS server is working correctly for
everyone else so we are assuming that something has been added or configured
on the machines that is causing dynamic registration to cease. Is anyone out
there aware of anything that might cause dynamic DNS registration to fail on
the client side?

Is the DHCP client service running? (required for DNS registration)
Does DHCP register on the behalf of clients or are the clients responsible
for DNS registration?
Do these clients have the correct Primary DNS suffix?
Do they use a Connection specific DNS suffix assigned by DHCP option 015?
