Is anyone else tired of these lame, phony, rubber-stamp style corporate "thank you and farewell" letters put out for PR purposes? Of course they won't state that he was good at A but sucked at B. And he sucked at B big time!

Honestly, if EA hires somebody who isn't a money-grubbing dinosaur, somebody who has passion and respect for both games and the industry, this could sway well in favour of gamers the world over. . . or at least, everywhere outside of china and australia.

Who am I kidding, bracing for Call of Duty rehash 2013, 2014, 2015, et al.

and was instrumental in driving our very significant growth in digital revenues.

So he's the asshole who pulled every single newish EA game from steam and made them origin exclusives? His "very significant growth" lost him my revenue in the form of a good number of those titles, including but not limited to Crysis 2/3, BattleField 3 and SimCity.

Jane: this is very poor reporting by Tom's Hardware, there isn't a single line explaining why he left.

Here is the official statement: http://investor.ea.com/releasedetail.cfm?ReleaseID=749234

Even if you base the article on the above source alone, you could have mentioned the part where press release talks about the "Business Outlook".

Here you can find the letter he sent to EA: http://kotaku.com/5991181/ea-ceo-john-riccitiello-steps-down

In that letter he makes everything that was already in the "Business Outlook" section of the press release clear. In essence, EA has been losing money for a long time and he takes accountability for that:

My decision to leave EA is really all about my accountability for the shortcomings in our financial results this year. It currently looks like we will come in at the low end of, or slightly below, the financial guidance we issued to the Street, and we have fallen short of the internal operating plan we set one year ago. And for that, I am 100 percent accountable.

what do you want to be Riccitiello will be gunning for Ballmers job or head up apple, i think more likely apple since all the DLC ICR and DMA runs right up iTard alley

Happy birthday to me! This is my best present of all, now maybe EA can cut the crap and start making quality games with minimal DRM again.

I remember playing D&D Forgotten realms on my 386. DRM at the time consisted of: Turn to page 17 of the manual and type the 4th word in the second paragraph.... Thank you for choosing our product.

[citation][nom]s3anister[/nom]Here's to hoping EA gets better and not worse after a new CEO is appointed.[/citation]

"Is he from Harvard?"

"No"

"Yale?"

"No"

"Any of the top business schools?"

"Nope. Just a gamer with a business and accounting degree in a small university. Everything looks great but his education source."

"Then he's not qualified to replace John!"

That sounds very nice, sadly I haven't been around long enough to experience that kind of DRM.

That's what happens when you push failed DRM that scares away customers while simultaniously dosn't stop piracy. And when you put all emphasis on multiplayer games at the sacrifice of better single player titles. And when you push useless DLC to try and milk every last dime out of customers while giving them relatively nothing in return, while at the same time offering games that are purposely unbalanced to build the 'pay to win' that breaks games and scares off even more customers.

And with the timing of this you can't help but wonder if he was directly responsible for the recent SimCity incidents. Trying to save a few dimes on servers to maximize profits, all while completely breaking a game. He is just getting out as gracefully as possible before the finger starts pointing his way.

I don't want a 'gamer' to be in charge of the games industry. Let the gamers design good games! But for a CEO put someone in place who has a sense of what people want, and who knows how to make a buck to keep the games industry alive and well without trying to suck every last penny out of people.
