Earphones with mic don't work properly on laptop

My laptop has a 2-in-1 jack, and a little while after getting it back from the repair shop it had stopped accepting audio peripherals with built-in mics properly. It accepts audio peripherals without mics alright though, albeit sometimes needing a little fiddling with the plug. I can get headphone-mic combos working by adding pressure at a certain angle though, so I just spam it with tape. That solution is cumbersome and quite unsustainable, however.

So my question is: could this possibly be a software issue? My laptop runs Conexant Smart Audio and I've tried messing with the settings to no avail. If it's a hardware issue, can I apply a simple fix myself or does this have to go to the repair shop again?

Sounds like hardware issue. If the headset works on another device fine then the jack on the laptop is damaged or worn.

You could try and clean it. Here's a couple different ways. Always have the device powered off.
