ECS K7S5A-Pro?

Hi,

I'm interested in buying an ECS K7S5A-Pro motherboard, and would like
feedback from you all regarding this board. Also, I have some specific
questions:

1) I was wondering if any of you who have or had this board happened to run
HDTach with it and an ATA100 drive? If so, what kind of numbers did you
get?

2) I'll probably initially be running a Duron CPU, and was wondering whether
the BIOS allows you to lower Vcore?

If the standard BIOS doesn't, do either of the other BIOS (Cheepo, etc.)?

I'm mainly interested in getting a stable system that's relatively
cool-running and quiet, and have had success with Abit motherboards lowering
the Vcore, and if I get the ECS, I'd like to try the same.

On that note, I'd be interested in hearing what kind of CPU temps you all
are seeing. I have one Asus board (A7A266) that absolutely runs CPUs hot,
and with my testing, I believe this is because the board is putting out a
relatively high Vcore (higher than the BIOS setting).

3) I'm kind of confused about the LAN. The specs indicate that it is
"optional", and it looks like the web stores just copied the specs. Does it
come with an onboard NIC or not?

Thanks,
Jim

HD performance is also very dependent upon the HD. The chipset has
very decent performance in the IDE department. The SIS drivers give a
slight performance boost in some areas over the MS drivers. I don't
recall whether I ran HDTach or not, but my older k7s5a had good IDE
performance.

No such option in the BIOS, but a Duron 1600 or 1800 will run quite
cool (and overclock easily via FSB). I am running a 1600 Duron OC'd
to 2000 right now (in an Asus mobo tho) at 1.55v (1.5v is std). My
current CPU temp is 33c socket, 34c diode. I have 2 case fans, and a
7200 RPM fan on a Copper Coolermaster heatsink, however, Speedfan is
running the fan at about 4800 rpm (k7s5a pro is not supported by
speefan, so get yourself a speed controlled HSF).

The only reason to get the K7S5A PRO is because of the 2 PC133 SDRAM slots
Otherwise get the K7VTA.

Some K7S5A PROs do not come with onboard LAN.
So you need to confirm with the seller that their boards has LAN.

If your buying off the internet, check with
http://www.resellerratings.com/
to see feedback on the seller

Tod,

Thanks.

One of the reasons that I'm looking at the K7S5A (vs. the K7VTA) is the
PC100/PC133. I want to re-use some sticks that I have.

Re. the LAN, thanks. Yes, I've been forced to actually call some vendors to
check this, and as usual, if they don't specifically say it has it, I'm
finding that it's not there :).

It appears newegg no longer carries the product. I purchased at least
2 from them in the past, and also purchased my original k7s5a from
newegg. Oh well.

See if you can sell the PC133 memory.
I have two K7S5A PRO motherboards, one has to be left on 24/7 or it loses
bios settings.
The local Fry's Electronics will sell K7VTA/AMD CPU combos for really good
prices.
AMD CPUs with the 333 bus are cheaper then AMDs with the 266 bus speed
and the K7VTA supports the 333 bus, the K7S5A PRO does not.

No.

No. The motherboard Vcore hardware doesn't support anything but the
VID pins so no BIOS, nor windows software, nor any other software,
can change it.

There is a resistor hardware mod for raising it but that wouldn't
work for lowering it. (The mod works by shunting the existing resistor
with a second one to lower the overall resistance but you can't raise
the resistance that way.)

One might be able to do that by modding the processor VID pins
directly, so that it requests the lower voltage, but I haven't tried
that myself on a Duron so I can't say for sure that it would work.

My original K7S5A came with it and so did the 20 buck K7S5A Pro refurb
from Newegg but that doesn't prove everyone is selling it with the
optional LAN. Best bet is to ask them

Hi All,

FYI, I'm still debating (with myself) about this, but re. the LAN/NIC,
so far what I'm finding is that if the website says "LAN (optional)",
then the onboard NIC is not there, and if the website says it's there,
then it's there. As Tod suggested, best thing is to call the vendor
first I think.

They show the LAN/NIC included here:
http://www.axiontech.com
http://www.axiontech.com/prdt.php?src=PW&item=35169

As stated, you should confirm with the vendor.
Been buying there for about 4 years now as they are local for me and
have been very reliable, but you would want to check them out at:
http://www.resellerratings.com/seller2097.html
before accepting any recommendations.
