What are some editor's that replace/work-as edit.com did?

Well, Notepad is an obvious choice.

If you're writing program code, then Notepad++ is very nice because it does syntax highlighting. See: http://notepad-plus-plus.org/

Are you specifically looking for an editor that can run in a DOS command prompt window? A quick Google search for "console mode editor" shows "Multitextor" - see: http://www.multitextor.com/
