Edius 2.5: Any advantage over Premiere Pro?

I have Premiere Pro (v 1.0) and a Canopus ACEDVio card. I am definitely
getting ProCoder 2.0 based on the functionality and MPEG-2 quality. I also
like its integration with Premiere -- as a plug-in. (The MainConcept encoder
that comes with Premiere seems sub-par to me, even after tweaking all the
available settings.)

I've downloaded the Edius 2.5 demo and am currently trying it out. Seems
comparible to Premiere Pro. So, here's my question for Edius owners:

Is there anything within Edius that Premiere Pro doesn't offer and you can't
do without?

Right now, the Adobe integration between Premiere, Encore and After Effects
is still winning me over.

TIA,

TIA,

I think you should put this message on Canopus forum as well.

I have use mainly Edius over Premier Pro 1.5 but with the new Canopus plugin
for Premiere I think it works very well with my DVStorm2 card.
However, if you use Canopus hardware I think Edius has an edge over
Premiere. Edius came on the market last summer and developed very fastly
during this first year from version 1 to 2.5.

Yeah, I thought of that after turning off my computer last night. Thanks for
your input!

Yeah, that's odd. I have a friend who bought every update of Edius,
because newer is better, and I mucked around with all of them, but I
haven't seen a significant improvement to jump to a version 2 all of a
sudden. It's more like v 1.5 really.

Anyway, it's nice for quick and dirty work, especially if you have
Storm 2-card. But it's audio-editing is not that great (although the
2.5 supports VST-plug-in linking). Oh, these are actually the only
third-party plug-ins Edius supports. But the main drawback for me to
_not_ buy it, is lack of EDL-support, otherwise I would buy it in a
heartbeat to do offline edits.

cheers

So, in your opinion, is Edius better suited for owners with dedicated
Canopus hardware like Storm and Raptor?

Yes. And yes, because IMHO most users use only 10% of the capability
of "big-uns" like Premiere or FCP or AVID, and these 10% you can do in
Edius, probably much faster too.

Probably right - I use Premiere Pro, and for at least 90% of my professional
work, I use only the most basic functions. But I'm used to the Premiere
system, so I stick with what I know...

Yes, that is a good reason to stick with it. A busy professional
doesn't really have the time to sit down and learn another program.

The DV Storm comes with "Storm Edit" - Canopus' basic editing software. It
has a much simpler interface that Premiere and a much shorter learning
curve, but it takes me twice as long to do anything with it as it does in
Premiere. For starters, none of the keyboard shortcuts are the same!

The only editing programs I think I would take the time to learn at this
point are Avid and Final Cut - since they could mean more business (hiring
out as an editor on those systems). Anything else just isn't worth it.

Oh, but you can reprogram Premiere's keys to StormEdit's ;-)

Agreed. But hey, there are a million opinions on this :)

The thought of that is making my head spin!
