The combination of Mozilla Thunderbird and Enigmail is also an excellent choice

I'm pretty sure I recall when this all went down. I wasn't able to log into Yahoo Mail anymore because they basically forced a password to be entered, as well as I believe rolling out new features including authentication.

It's not primary and I typically only use it for notifications.

So what's a e2ee mail service that is free and plugs into Thunderbird so I don't have to use a browser to read my email. I can just run Thunderbird for all my accounts?

Topmail (www.topmail.com) is also a great new alternative to Proton Mail. I use it and have had no issue with privacy since switching, it also has OpenPGP encryption and is easy to use.

If you use Outlook, the best option for Email encryption is the gpg4o plugin. There is a free version out now.

We need an alternative, and that's for sure - but to say protonmail is the only viable option, is not correct. There are tons of services out there which are fighting against mass surveillance and are giving users more rich and better features (for e.g., https://www.mailfence.com/, https://www.tutanota.com/, ...)

I agree with wild_1, there are a numerous number of alternatives, I personally use www.mailfence.com because their servers are based in Belgium and benefits a real data privacy (the only non US based company that has zero-knowledge compared to their competitors that are based often in USA and where the gov spy everything of your private life)
here is a link to a comparative of some of the encrypted email service providers: http://www.emailquestions.com/encrypted-email-service-providers/

Could’ve with a HUGE C. Then when Yahoo scans incoming and outgoing eMails(stated clearly in their TOS) our mail would have once again been laid bare for the dishonest to happily harvest.

Of course that (ETEE) solution is too simple for a multi-national company to consider. Shows how much they care. No solution is fireproof but a lackadaisical approach is like using a cable lock to protect your bike. My bike has 2 Ulocks and a cable lock. Quick lick for thieves? No. Did Yahoo make access simpler than it should have been? Quite obviously.
