Ceramic engines are nothing new.
The issue is that they are prone to wearing quickly in even conventual use.

We've been trying to do a ceramic rotary engine for the masses for years, but thus far, not much for funding has gone into the project.
(Ceramic because of the heat properties, allowing higher efficiency and insanely higher RPMs, and a rotary engine, because they're a much better design overall, short of a fatal flaw, that they need constant servicing due to wearing fast.)
 
If one could cram as many of those as they wanted into a modern sized "thumb drive," we're talking easy movement of huge files. Heck, they could cram hundred into a 3.5 inch HDD. The possibilities are endless. But yeah, we'll see this technology in around 10 years for around $500 a chip.

Sounds great and all as long as they end up taking advantage of this new tech though instead of just keeping it in the papers and their labs. How long ago was it that we heard about fiber optics and the internet yet no such speeds for us?
 
Usually these researches never make something that will be sold on the shelves. A lot of incredible technologies have been developed in the past in university, but the majority of them are forgotten.

For example, a plasma torch for trash gazefication. Yhis torch could be used in the oil sand purification and could drastically render an incredible results... but we prefer making toxic lake of heavy metals and using drastic amount of water.

the problem with this kind of advance in tech. is that we never actually get to see it any time soon.
few years are going to be needed for us to be able to buy this stuff.
 
Guys, it says right in the first paragraph that they made a fingernail sized chip. Where is everyone pulling this shit ball of CRAP that they haven't done this??

Basic math: If the same sized chip holds 50 times more data, that means the atoms are 80 percent smaller, not 90 percent.

Also, as others have said, but I'll repeat: don't lie in a title.
 
I can't believe I overlooked that:

That's just stupid. You can't make atoms smaller, and they didn't. The atoms would have to become extremely cold, and even then would only shrink a little, not 90%. Also, "the ones used today"? So we're using atoms now? Can I borrow your atoms, I lost mine.

No it doesn't, it says "Imagine". It also says, "By working at the nanometer level, the engineers added nickel to magnesium oxide (a ceramic) and created a material with clusters of nickel atoms around 10 square nanometers in size." FYI, 10 square nanometers is not roughly the same as fingernail-sized.
 
Hmmm:

Yeah I guess this will be available on the market in two or even three years the way things are going....

One day we will get 150TB storage 'cards" the size of calling cards while most people would just use house storgae which would be compatable and synced to our online storage and linked to our houses. The info would then assess, download, update, and sync all your info and keep all your house files in a 1000TB house drive....

Good with material physics, awful with math. 50 time more would be 1.02 terabytes. 1.00 terabytes is 50 times as much.
They tried to teach my daughter that crap in school. Think of the degenerate case: 20, now 100% more than 20!

Ya, that's how major universities can make so much money. Universities with discoveries like this are much more wealthy then they lead you to believe.
