Anyone know what the "enter seed option" on the top right side of the
choose your world page means? It appeared after getting the latest
patch 1.20. I know what the preserve random seed option does and
wondered if it relates to it. TIA

It lets you specify a random seed for the world generation stuff. If you
put the same random seed in for world creation for the same size/attributes
of a map, it should give you the same map every time (if you like a certain
map).

I don't even know what CITES stands
for, so I don't speak for them.

Yeah but say you like a random generated map is there a way to find
out what seed number it was to save it? I never really got this
option since there isn't a way to know what map a particular number
will generate. In that case I am better off letting the computer pick
for me.

Yes. Each time you start a new game, it's written to the ini file.
The ini file is in the home directory of whichever version you're
playing, and is called either civ3.ini, ptw.ini, or conquests.ini.

Just look for this line:

WorldSeed=...

Interesting. Now I will have to go back and check old saved games.

There is a utility at civfanatics that will pull the seed from a saved game.
I don't remember the name however.
