Be cautious about whatever numbers Epic puts out. They have a history of dubious use of large numbers. I doubt Epic spent $18 billion the same way I doubt UT3 was pirated by 40 million people.
I do like the EGS though. I do buy games there. I also have confidence that the company behind the Unreal Engine isn't going anywhere. Embracing mods and improving friends list features seem to be the places where Epic needs to focus their attention. The other community features (particularly game forums) are not as big a deal as some people make them out to be.
