EQ2: Log files and parsers

I'm dividing my time on EQ2 fairly unevenly between two characters. What
I'd like to do is log and monitor their progress using a log parser much
like I used to do on EQ1. But I'm having a problem with the way the log
files work.

It seems when I first start EQ2 each session, it automatically starts
logging to eq2log.txt (or similar) in the 'logs' subdirectory, and it seems
that both characters' info is getting appended to this file. If I /log to
switch the recording off, and then /log again to switch it back on, it
starts logging to the correct file, which is the one stored under the
character's own name in the appropriate server subdir (in my case Neriak).

It's only a minor pain in the butt, but I wondered if anyone had any idea
how to correct this and make sure the game begins logging to the correct
file at startup?

It's my opinion, is all.
No, I'm not qualified. No, I don't know everything.
No, I probably haven't got all the facts.
And yes, you probably *are* better than me.
Believe me, I can live with it.

I'm sorry I can't help you, but I was wondering where you got the parser for
EQ2? I would like to start using one.

Thanks

I have been using the one on www.thescoutssanctuary.com - it is called
Statilyzer or something. It seems good but it is the only one I have
ever used so I have nothing to compare it to.

What's the point though? What do the log files tell you that might be
of interest?

You can use them to try and compare different tactics to see if they
raise your DPS. Is dual wield better or perhaps one handed and a
shield? Is buff A worth the power/concentration when compared to buff
B. Things like that.

I'm not really one for analysing the numbers that closely - when I play
my assassin I basically like to see how my DPS compares to other
members of the group. It's not so important when I play my warrior as
that's not my main contribution to the group.

I like to check them out from time to time just to see how much damage I can
really do. I'm not into the really heavy analysis that some people do, it's
just something I like to take a look at for fun. (not to mention, that since
I don't understand half of what they do, I couldn't analyze them if I wanted
to)

The one I used for EQ would also log conversations, so if I wanted to find
someone I'd met but forgot their name I could go back and find it. I could
also look at the performance of a whole group and see who did the most
damage. I could also see how much damage my pet was doing.

You can also use them to find out how hard various MOBS hit (somtetimes in
battle you're just too busy to notice) and how many hitpoints they have.

I have two very different feelings about logs/parsing. If I'm in a
group that I don't know people (increasingly rare, especially at higher
levels) and somebody says they are parsing, I don't do anything
special. Sometimes I may even lower my DPS some, just because I don't
know if they have an agenda. There is so much finger-pointing and nerf
calling on the forums, it is disgusting. I'd rather not feed the fire,
whether I agree with it or not.

If I'm in a group with my friends and somebody turns on a parser, we
generally go all out and see who can beat who. It is really fun with a
bunch of DPS trying to out damage each other, yet keep from getting
agro. The heckling that goes on can't help but make somebody smile 😉

There are two parsers that I know of - Statalyzer (which was mentioned)
and a different one that is better for just plain combat called
(surprisingly enough) CombatStats - http://www.combatstats.com. You
enter the names of your group and then tell it when to start keeping
track and when to stop. It then lists the highest hit, what it was and
from who, the total damage and DPS from the group and the damage the
group took. Then it lists the group members (in order of DPS) with the
damage given, damage received and DPS.

That said, I use Statalyzer and only because it lists out the
conversations I have if I ever need to refer to them again. I haven't
downloaded and messed with CombatStats, I just leave that for my
friends 😛
