Current data says Meltdown/Sceptre fixes have minimal impact on gaming. If gaming is all you plan to do on your PC, then there is no AMD equivalent to Intel's chips, Intel's chips are ~10% faster on average in gaming than AMD's nearest priced Ryzen. This means you need to spend more on AMD to achieve equivalent performance in most cases.
If you do content creation and other productivity stuff, then Ryzen becomes more interesting at all price points. (If I had to build with Ryzen today, I'd try to aim for a 1600 too.)
