Does anyone know what this error code means and how I can resolve it? I am pretty new to computers so don't know to much so leaving a detailed answer will be greatly appreciated! -Thanks, Tom

Solution
Don't know if this has been resolved yet, but Asus Q-Code 40 means your PC has awoken from S4 sleep. What happens is in Windows 8/8.1 a feature called Fast Startup is on by default, it works by saving system info to a file upon shutdown so when you start your PC again, Windows uses that system info to resume your PC instead of restarting it.

To disable this, right click your start menu and go to Power Options, then select Choose what the Power button does, then under Shutdown settings you can disable Fast Startup. Also, disable Fast Boot in your BIOS as well, it will be in the boot section.
According to the manual, the code means that the motherboard is waking up from the s4 sleep state. I have no experience with boards such as these, so sadly, I don't know much about this. The code doesn't seem to be an error. It seems to be just a notification.

I was wondering about Q Code 40 as well, as my Asus X99 Deluxe was showing it.

It turns out, for me at least, it was a problem with the 24 pin motherboard connector.

I didn't notice this at first, but my problem first showed up after removing the cable to do a custom sleeve job on it. I later replaced the cable altogether and the motherboard stopped showing code 40. I put back the original cable to confirm and, sure enough, it showed 40 again.

Not sure if that is the cause of your problem, but maybe it will answer the question for someone else with a similar one.

THAT's exactly what helped! Win8 and above wrote on hdd the last RAM informations if computer shut off and at the start it loads the information for a fast boot. The Asus mainboard thinks it wakes up and shows 40 insted of A0.
To deactivate the option is the solution for the "problem". In fact it isnt one. Its not a bug (error), it's a feature! 😉

Thank you man. Googled it many times.

It's about your BIOS configuration. Nothing to worry. Just load the defautls in your bios and restart your computer. This because could be fast boot, and 3 another options with you can resume your status fast on windows. V4MP already explain, but to fix i guess you need to know about this too.

Sorry to bring this post back from the dead but I'd like to know if there's any actual advantage from having Fast Boot enabled in BIOS as well has Fast Startup on Windows Power Options! Thanks in advance 😀

Fast Startup is stupid and dangerous. You don't want it. If you want a faster boot, get a faster drive :) (BIOS fastboot is ok)
Maybe if you're running a POS laptop and using it like the average MAC user, and you'll never access the drive from anywhere else til you give it to someone to recover your files when the computer dies, then fast startup might be able help you out. Maybe.

Warning reasoning includes therapeutic(?) vent:

I was just looking up that Qcode 40, saw it out of the corner of my eye for the second time after installing windows 10 last night. GOOD THING! Today when I switched between my GPU's dual BIOS, regardless if it was the mining or gaming BIOS, AMD settings would crash when the desktop was loading, and I had to mess around to get the mining BIOS working - and I would have to figure out what that was about... Hi Fast Startup! You are a microsoft baby through and through...

I do so hate being forced to upgrade windows - since 3.1 we've hated each other. Upon further research, it turns out I would have run into problems (corruption) when using my Windows 7 boot (or any other system) and manipulating data on the Win 10 drive... Hate 10 so much... even with the spy crap gutted or blocked there's still more stupidity/weaselery to fight. I'm not willing to find out right now, but I was thinking the "cold" (or so I thought) boot was slower today vs yesterday, while restart remains just as fast. That doesn't track. I'm betting with "Fast Startup" and it's friends turned off, my proper cold boot will be faster than with that "yet another microsoft idiocy" enabled.

On the upside, asus has redeemed itself quite a bit since it hooked hard left in the 00's, my ROG mobo is fairly good and the Qcode just saved me a ton of headache in the future, so they're right back at the top in my book! Still suffering from the drawbacks of a modern corp.. but how many aren't? Not like that's a good excuse tho.. END

EDIT: I was right, Windows 10 "Fast Startup" disabled is faster than with it enabled. BIOS still fast boot enabled.
