Hi all,

Recently been getting the error "Realtek Gaming GbE Family Controller has a Hardware IO error." in event viewer popup.

It has come out of the blue and had Windows 10 at the time it started popping up i tried upgrading to Windows 11 to see if that would help but did not change anything.

The issue is as soon as this error happens i loose internet and it is immediately followed by " Reset to device, \Device\RaidPort1, was issued" followed by.
"Reset to device, \Device\RaidPort3, was issued" and my pc is effectively frozen.

The Realtek Gaming GbE Family Controller does reset itself but above error causes hdd issues and file explorer does not work along with every app that is not open at the time. I cant even restart the pc as it just hangs. I have to force a shutdown to solve the issue and everything is back to normal again.

It happens at random and usually at least once per evening when i use my computer.

The event viewer also details another error:
"Metadata staging failed, result=0x80070490 "random containers after this"
This error happens on repeat non stop. and always precedes the error.

I suspect it may be hardware related for the motherboard network controller or maybe windows is corrupt.

The only thing i can think back to that changed when i got this error was that i purchased a second monitor 1440P 180HZ. Not sure how this would be relevant though.

Any help with this error is welcomed or steps i can take to narrow down the issue. I've had no other serious issues with my PC besides this to date. I had the odd bluescreen but nothing causing a freeze up like this with forced restart.

Temps all appear to be fine.

Thanks,

BIOS version for your motherboard?

it started popping up i tried upgrading to Windows 11 to see if that would help but did not change anything.
Did you reinstall the OS?

You forgot to mention the make and model of the PSU in your build and it's age.

Hi there,

BIOS version is F38D. Didn't think version would be an issues as I've been on it since i first flashed BIOS and has been working great up until now.

Most of the components (CPU/RAM and Motherboard) are 3 and a half years old.

My PSU is a Zalman ZM-550-EBT

I only upgraded to Windows 11 and not a clean install.

My next thought was to reinstall the OS. i just have to buy a cheap USB storage drive to do it. If that fails was thinking of disabling the Realtek controller in the bios and running pc without it (no internet though) for a a while to see if that helps. If it does guessing it mean its hardware related for the onboard network controller?

Forgot to mention i have updated the Realtek controller drivers to latest but did not help.

Update,

I have formatted hardrives and reinstalled windows 11.

I also disabled the RGFC lan controller in the bios and bought and installed a new network card for my PCI slot.

Things were going well as i thought i solved the issue.

Sadly all is back again. Same exact errors meaning this was not the source of the issue.

Only thing that is changed is when the controller fails and i looses interent the hdds all discconnet except my windows M2 drive which means my pc does not freeze up anymore and i can continue use but with no interent and no ability to get it back except retart the system. Im guessing this is beacuse i formatted the drives and there is no reliance on the other drives from windows anymore menaing it doesnt lock upo maybe?

Im worried now that this may be the motherboard having hardware issues. Is there any way to check thermals for onboard devices etc? I ask because of thread below which appears to have similar issues as i had.

Im going to try flash my bios to latest as a next possible last step as cant think of anything else.
