So I’m planning on buying a Ethernet cord for my Xbox one. What type do I need for the Xbox one? And also does the Ethernet cord have to be plugged into the router?

Suggest you to get a cat 6 cable, and yes, you want to plug into the router to use it. But Xbox one has wireless as well.

Cat5e, in whatever length you need. No need for Cat6 or anything higher.
Stay away from the advertised "flat" cables. Those are actually non-conforming.

And yes, it needs to be plugged into something at both ends.
Router at one end, XBox at the other end.
