Ethernet Extending to Computers

Hi,

My router is downstairs and I have a computer two floors above that. I have tried using a Netgear Powerline but I only get around 7mps down instead of 40 mbps. Anyway, the point is that it is too slow. How do I get a connection which would have the same or almost the same speeds as a hard connection to the router?

Ideally, you run a Cat5e cable to the PC.

Powerline and WiFi are very environmentally sensitive. Powerline depends on the condition of the house wiring, and WiFi performance depends on a whole host of potential issues.

Running an Ethernet wire will likely be the cheapest, but most difficult means of getting higher speed. Other then that you'll need to move the router to the middle floor and buy Wifi equipment for it. Possibly you'll want to upgrade the wifi router to something with "AC" and buy the right adapters for all your equipment.

The best way is always wired ethernet - wi-fi equipment and powerline adapters can work - but remember, you get what you pay for. A $20 powerline adapter usually has no comparison to a $100 adapter....depending upon the age of the house, electronics, electrical wiring, near by interference (neighbor's wi-fi, cell towers, etc), to get a working solution could run $100 - $300 for equipment to make this work. If you are comfortable running the Cat 5e/6 wiring, this would be the cheapest and best solution.

If you are not - check your local contractors - for around $150, you can have the wiring run for you, ensuring that it is up to code, and have the best result.
