My computer will not connect with an ethernet cable (it is a good cable btw) but my wireless is working just fine.

I ran malware and mcafee and all is good... nothing worked, but then I restored to the last system restore point. This worked, but the problem returned... so I did another system restore, which worked again.

Then, it happened again... so I went to restore it again, but this time the restore was not far enough back in time... so now I am stuck. I have spent some time on this and can not resolve it. I have searched the posts here and tried some of the fixes that seemed to work for others, but none are working for me.

I have Vista Ultimate (ugh) and it doesn't appear to be one of their updates. so...

Note: ISP is no help... they say all is good and it is a network cable. It is not a network cable...Thanks in advance.

EDIT: 2 hrs later

I uninstalled McAfee and the internet is connected (although it takes forever to recognize connection now). I tried reinstalling McAfee...and interestingly, the internet connection shows connected, but no browsers will connect to internet... So, I uninstalled McAfee again...still shows connected, but actually is connected.

So, problem appears to be McAfee. Anybody know what I should do to keep the AntiVirus, but also keep internet?

Thanks again.

Yes... when you go to the 1st article - McAfee explains that this problem is 'an emerging issue, and a root cause has not yet been identified.'

The only one of their 3 solutions that worked for me is to install McAfee without a firewall.

Rule 5—"Your Firewall Should Not Make You More Vulnerable" - from McAfee's own business briefs - Eight “Must-Have” Firewall Rules

Seems kinda like a deal-breaker.

Thanks for the quick responses. AB

I have the same problem with windows 10......I went back to windows 8.1 because i could easily. I only have wireless connection to internet. The computer sees the wireless connection but won't allow it to connect. Should I reinstall Windows 10 and try the fix.
