Hello all.

So a couple days ago I upgraded by internet from a 15 up/1 down to 50/2. After making sure my ISP made the switch and everything was ready to go, I did a speed test (http://www.speedtest.net/) with the ethernet cord connected. I was pretty upset to find that I was getting around 13 up and .5 down. I fiddled around and then decided to try the wireless.

And bam! Instant 50/2 on wireless.

I figured it was no big deal, but now I'd like to be hard wired.
Every test with the ethernet connected goes as such:
- Speed test spikes up to around 30
- As the test goes on it dips lower and lower, till finally settling around 13

I attempted plugging the cable into different ports on my router. I even tried a different cord.

Before the speed switch I never had any problem with the ethernet. It was always a steady 15/1.

Any ideas what could be causing the issue?

If you tried a different cord, than that is not the issue.

You are most likely on a 10/100 port, which is 100 Mbps, which maxes out around 12.5 Mb/sec (yes, that old megabits conversion to megabytes). What you need is a Gigafast connection, also known as 10/100/1000. This means that port in both the router, and in your computer are Gigafast, and the wire connecting them should be CAT 5e or CAT 6.

Hmm. I see. I guess I was just confused considering it used to pull 15 mbps no problem and is suddenly down to 13 with the new connection. I suppose I may need a new router anyway. I'm been using my Linksys E2000 for several years now.

EDIT: I've just checked on the Linksys router. According to their website, the ports are 10/100/1000 and so is the port on my laptop. =/ So I still don't know what the problem is.
