Every few minutes I lose focus of my application, such as when I am playing games, suddenly it switches to the desktop and I have to open it from taskbar again. In some games I just lose focus for a few seconds, and in browsers, I lose focus and have to click the browser again. I really want to find out what is causing this, maybe a process? If so, how do you track it?
Thanks guys!

I too had this problem - every 10~30 seconds program deselected - lost focus

Looking for help I found so called many possible solutions... which ALL Failed

Windows Update - turn off
Windows Aero - turn off
Widgets - Turn off
Fire Wall - Replaced with 3rd Party
Virus, Root kit or Similar Malware - Scanned with Many Anti-Rootkit Scanners, Virus Scanners And Anti-Malware programs and tools - All Clean no issues
Etc...

THE Only Program that had Any affect was Gboost a Gaming Utility that closes Many programs and services suitable for improving gaming on older or low spec computers - worked for game minimizing but not suitable for everything else

But in the End It was Wireless network "TPG-Link Wireless..." program that was Stealing the Focus from every Program - Exit Program - Solved

Note Internet connection is NOT Reliant on the TPG-Link program running - It just a manager

CAUSE: TPG-Link Wireless... - Exit program - remove from Start-up - FIXED

There is an app called Focus Taker ID that will check that for you. You can search for it online. To use it, you run the app, and once its open, watch it and when the misbehaving process steals focus, you can see the name of what did it. That's called Focus Taker ID

Well Mark, here it is a year and a half and you saved me from pulling all my hair out - thanks.

I just changed my TP-Link router to another brand but left the TP-Link configuration program running since it is/was useful. (For example it quickly shows other wifi's in my neighborhood and what channel they are using.) Since I have done so, my current window started losing its focus. First I noticed it with Firefox. As I would scroll nothing would happen until I clicked the window/webpage to get the focus back. I had to do this continuously. I thought it was a setting with FF. Then as I was searching for a solution, Google lost its focus also! Then, as I was looking at the msconfig window I lost focus there too.

After searching I ran across your brief. Bingo. TP-Link in your notes focused my attention crisply. I disabled it and the loss of focus stopped. Now I will uninstall the utility and re-install it should I switch back to the TP-Link router.

Thanks again Mark for taking the time to reach across space and time into the future to help... me.

Markkk I have also TPlink wireless card and also had issues with losing focus. My girlfriend had the same issue on her laptop, but reinstalling the driwer helped. I have a desktop with the card and I almost lost my sanity... after reading your post I realized, that problems with loosing focus started after I moved my PC from my parents house (didnt have the wireless) to the house with my girlfriend. Also realized, that in some cases, I dont have this problem with focus. On other days I have it and in these days I have also problem to stay connected to the wifi via TPling Wireless manager. You saved me from reinstalling the Windows and from downloading all the 65+ games on my Steam :) big thanks :)

I was having this same issue. I looked in the Event Viewer > Windows Logs > Application, which showed errors from NvStreamNetworkService.exe every few seconds. A quick search showed that Nvidia's GeForce Experience app was the culprit. I uninstalled it and stopped losing focus immediately.

dude i did the same thing, and i found an error every few seconds from "autodesk content service" or something like that, anyway i uninstalled it and now i don't lose focus anymore, thank you !!

I second this. It keeps happening to me. I feel like it coincided with a bunch of Windows updates that happened about a month ago. It's driving me nuts.

exactly same issue and same question!!

i just found a solution!

download this app: "Process Hacker", once it's installed and opened do the following:

go to Help ====> Log
or simply press Ctrl+L

keep it running in the background and go to your normal work, when the lose focus thing happens get back to the log immediately and check what's causing it!

for me i found out it was "bluestacks" the android emulator app for pc, i unistalled it and everything was back to normal
gosh! i was this close of doing a format to my pc and over what?! some stupid tiny issue like this!

For me, it is the HPLaserJetService.exe that causes this problem. If you have local HP printer drivers installed, check the status of the Service in the task manager. Sometimes when it is stopped, there is a process attempting to restart it ~ every 30 seconds. You'll know when its happening, its really annoying. I open the Task Mgr and kill the HP process that is trying to restart the service and the problem is fixed.

As someone else mentioned, open the Event Viewer > Windows Logs > Application and look for (!)Errors in the list. Click on one and you'll see the offending process or service. If you fixed it, the (!)Error will not show up any more. If you did not, you'll see more entries in the Application log.

Omfg, easiest way to solve this right here, no downloads or anything. Just remember the exact time your window went out of focus and then open up that log. I've been having this problem for a couple years, didn't look into it much but THIS solved it. I looked at the log after my window went out of focus and saw that AVG seemed to be the problem for me. So I deleted it, disconnected my internet temporarily and it hasn't gone out of focus for hours and usually it would be every 20 mins or so.

works! I love you so much

Hi All, what i did find after much trying: i kept loosing focus TO the desk top! there is an area / icon on the task bar, far bottom & far right of the screen. The task bar is usually at the bottom of the screen. if you hover the mouse of this area (about 5mm wide and 10mm high, similar colour to the taskbar - you will see the words "Show desktop" ! that is exactly what it does if you continue to hover over the icon. it is blank by the way - no name.
now that i know what causes the current windows to slip over to the desktop view, i will keep mouse away from the "option". regards, chas

I had this issue today and managed to fix it. It looks like there are multiple causes but for me it involved a crashing service.

1. I installed Autodesk 2016 and started experiencing this issue. Every 5-7 seconds, the window I had open (didn't matter if it was chrome, lotus notes, microsoft word etc.) would lose focus (become unselected) and then refocus.

2. I launched the task manager to see if there were any processes running that might be starting and stopping. I noticed that wermgr.exe was starting and stopping over and over again. This is the windows error reporting software, so something was happening and windows was logging it..

3. I launched the event viewer and saw that a service (Autodesk Content service) has crashed 208 times in the last 2 hours!

4. I went and disabled the service in services.msc and the issue was resolved. Of course I have a service that needs to be fixed now, but at least I was able to determine the cause of the focus issue.

Since multiple people have posted with resolutions that involved uninstalling a particular piece of software or driver, I would highly recommend that you check your running processes and event viewer for errors. Service errors may be the underlying cause for what falsely appears to be a random issue.

Thanks! This solved my problem! Been having this problem for half a year, (it's really annoying!)

Although the application that was failing for me was "CS6ServiceManager.exe". I stopped it from running just by changing it's name... probably not the best way to do it, but it works!

This is happening to me with multiple programs/services that I cannot turn off because they're essential. Such as the Software Protection Service that shows up in the event viewer as "Security-SPP", and the GoogleUpdateTask which I'm guessing was installed in order to use google voice via gmail.

I think malwarebytes might have fixed it for me.
