So, a couple of months ago, I reinstalled Windows on my PC and suddenly all my games started running flawlessly. But after about a month, the lag came back, and it's driving me crazy. I've tried everything I can think of driver updates, cleaning my hard drive, malware scans and alot LOT more but nothing seems to work. It's like my PC is cursed, I've been dealing with this issue for years now, and I'm at the end of my rope. If anyone has any tips on how to fix this, I'd REALLY appreciate it.

Update your post to include full system hardware specs and OS information.

Windows: source?

Use Task Manager and Resource Monitor to observe system and components' performance. Use both tools but only one tool at a time.

Process Explorer (Microsoft, free) may also help.

https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/downloads/process-explorer

Objective being to discover what changes between flawless performance and lagging performance.

Could be some app or utility running in the background or being triggered to run at some time or another.

Look in Task Scheduler.

No problem....

How old is that HP 500 watt PSU? Heavy gaming use?

Check the system performance using Task Manager, Resource Monitor, and Process Explorer.

Hopefully you will be able to spot some change or changes when the system lags.

Something the system is doing or maybe trying to do.

Ideally, you would have data from right after the Windows reinstall and be able to compare things.

Still if you take a look at Update History and think back you may remember some update or other change common to when the lags began and then began a second time after the reinstall.

around 3-4 years now. and I've noticed while playing Overwatch 2 that my GPU usage is erratic, going up and down constantly and my game starts to stutter but it stop after a match or two. but i literally have no idea when it started from what i remember is about 5 months to 1 year after I got the pc

Check Reliability History and Event Viewer. Either one or both tools may be capturing some error codes, warnings, or even information events just before or at the time of the erratic GPU and/or stutters.

Is there some way you can swap in another known working PSU - preferably with higher wattage?

Just remember to use only the cables that come with the swapped in PSU.
