Hi guys, after Christmas i built a new computer with a q6600 (no oc), foxconn p9657ab-mker2sh, 2gb ocz ddr2800 platinum, zotac 8800gts 512mb and an Apevia 500w concord power supply. Last night I was playing Demigod (pretty cool game btw), when my computer just shut down with no prior warning/bsod/error message. It just shut off. It tried to restart itself but it will not POST. I took everything out except the cpu mobo and ram... nothing. I reset the CMOS..... nothing. Changed up the proc..... nothing. I dont have another power supply readily available, and there is nowhere in the immediate area that carries them. Is there any way that I could test my power supply to see that it is functioning correctly? If so, what exactly would i be looking for? Im pretty sure that i have a voltmeter around here somewhere, but ive never used it to check a power supply before, so what would be the procedure. Im fairly certain that my power supply just couldnt hold up with all of these higher end parts. When it powers on, the fans all turn on, the hard drive starts to spin and it checks, the leds on the mobo trn on, just no POST, actually, no beeps at all. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I am about to pull my hair out.

Be sure you have a working speaker connected that will sound the BIOS beep codes. Remove ALL the system RAM and boot the system. If the system does not beep signifying there is no RAM in the system, you have a bad MB or CPU.

Badge, you are the man, you know that? Always there... any time ive posted you are the first person to post back 😛 thanks a lot. Anyway..... i took out the ram and i got no beeps at all. So I was sweating that my q6600 died, so i changed out that for my old e2180 i had laying around and still no beeps at all. Do you think that it would be my motherboard? Is it still possible that it could be my power supply? I just went throught that list and I can say that I pass all of the 19 points.... so is it likely my mainboard? Is there any other way i can check the mobo just to be sure?]

it still sounds as RAM to me. Take out RAM sticks and reseat only one (us a lot of force to push it in, but not enough to brake the mobo) if nothing happens, try the other stick. It could be a defective stick or intall. If nothing happens, then it should be PSU or ram.

Honestly, i dont see it being ram, the way that my computer just shut off with no prior warning. Any ram problems ive ever had were accompanied by bsods and random errors.

I'm telling you... It happened to me. Besides it's a very easy task to do.
Also if the MOBO has video, try taking out the 8800 and using the onboard
In my experience working MOBO's almost never fail.

ok, ok, well... i reseated both of the sticks of ram, and it did not change anything :[ Is it possible that the motherboard could fail? Like rojito said, i just dont think i have ever heard of the mobo just up and dying suddenly like it did...... i also just jdont see both of the sticks of ram dying instantly and simultaneously either.... this is weird.

Well, if you installed only one stick, then took it out and installed the other AND MADE SURE IT WAS PROPERLY INSTALLED, we have to seriously start thinking on mobo and psu.
Does your mobo have onboard video?
Since your computer was up and running, there should be no other installation problems besides the ram.

Yeah, they were properly installed, and yes, my mobo has onboard video, but my computer doesnt even post to get to a place where i would need onboard video.

Sounds like bad RAM to me, that or a loose connection. It's possible your Mobo just died on you, yes, but its unlikely unless you had metal touching the board.

Could very well be the PSU, yours did exactly the same thing mine did.
Sudden shutdown, try to reboot, and you get fans, lights etc, but nothing else.
I suspect 1 of the 12 volt rails died on mine.
A new PSU brought it all back to life with no issues.

rojito or badge or anybody.... would you suggest buying a new psu and trying that? If so, could you reccomend one thats decent around the 50 dollar range?

that psu looks a little chincy honestly... idk, im going to keep a look out on sites like gizmodo cause they usually have some good deals...... if anybody has any good deals that they know of, i would greatly appreciate a link 😀

I dont know, sometimes somebody just stumbles across a screaming deal, like the one eagle had on newegg about a year ago: a 130 rebate on a 700w psu... took it down to FREE. I almost bought it, but i was wary of the rebate 😛

Ok guys, I bought a new psu... and guess what..... thats not the problem . I took out the ram and i dont get any kind of beeps at all.... its like if i wouldve just left it in. Is it my motherboard? I tried swapping in an old e2180 and it still does the same thing, the only things left are the motherboard and video card, and I dont think that its the video card, but im going to try taking it out and turning it on without it.

EDIT
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
-Ok, i reset my cmos again and took out the video card and started it. Viola! a post..... so i popped the video card back in and restarted, and, it posts, but no video signal 🙁 is there a chance that my video card has died? I tried it in the other pcie slot and still the same result. Tried 2 diff monitors and about 4 diff cord combos.... any ideas?
