Hi there ;D
I just wanted an opinion from you about a computer i`m about to buy in Evesham UK ... especially if you could tell me the quality of the DVD burner and the motherboard.

here are the specs:

Processor
AMD Athlon 64 3000+ processor with HyperTransport technology

Operating system
Microsoft® Windows® XP Professional Edition

Mainboard
MSI MS-6702 Mainboard

Memory
2 x 512MB dual channel DDR (PC3200) 400MHz

Hard disk
160GB serial ATA hard disk with 8MB buffer

Graphics
256MB DDR ATI Radeon 9600 graphics with TV-out & DVI

Monitor
Mitsubishi 19" Diamond Plus93

CD-ROM/DVD-ROM drive
DVD-ROM (16x)

Floppy drive
1.44MB 3.5" floppy drive

CD/DVD Rewriter
Sony DW-U14A Multi Format 4x +R/±RW DVD writer

... all that plus some others minor stuff (modem, sound card, ethernet card ...) for £1150 ...
An other question, i`m thinking of using this computer for some small video editing ... would it be better to have two serial ATA hard drives or one with a partition?

Thank you all for your opinions. See u 😉

Gwen, I don't think this section of the forum gets much traffic. You may want to move your post to the CPU section for better response.

EDIT: Oh, and Welcome to the forum!

While it's true that this isn't the best place for this post, we might as well answer it, now that it's here.

What you have outlined is a good system, although I would likely picka different mobo manufacturer. Parts of it are fairly cutting edge and others show where you're trying to save some bucks. That's okay as long as you pick good parts and don't create any bottlenecks.

Here are my specific recommendations based on your intended use:

1) Pick the Plextor multiformat DVD burner over the Sony. It's much faster in real-world tests.

2) For video editing, go for 1 gig of Dual DDR RAM. The more memory for video editing the better.

3) One SATA 160 gig drive is okay for smaller videos, but you certainly do want to partition it. An 8 or 9 gig boot partition is okay for XP, then two more partitions- one smaller as the D: drive for the actualy video editing software, etc. and another as the E: drive where you can store the video files. That way, if your OS partition gets wrecked, you don't lose everything. If you want two drives, more is always better, but don't skip the partitioning!

Aslo, I have to comment that the sound card is NOT part of 'other stuff' if you actually want people to SEE your finished videos and like them. Picking a good sound card is important. After all, I'm going out on a limb and assume that your videos will have a sound track. Why not allow others to appreciate it?

Those are my comments. Since I've been involved in PC's since 1983, you can take them as 'comments backed by experience'.
