Hello all, today I booted up Kingdoms of Amular and I heard an odd noise coming from my tower. I took the side panel off and had a listen and it sounded almost like a high pitched noise. I checked the fans with a flashlight and they are running normally from what I can tell. I tried it out with a couple other games and what I got was a buzzing noise? From what I have read on some other posts it sounded similar to the fan rubbing against a wire. I am curious if any of you have a solution for this or if I need to RMA my card?

Few questions/troubleshooting steps for you, to help isolate the problem:

Do you only hear the noise when playing games?
If so, if you increase the fan speed of the graphics card when not playing a game (using MSI afterburner, or your software of choice), do you hear the same problem noise?
Is the noise a high pitched whine/buzz?
For the games you tested where you hear the noise, are you running them with v-sync on or off?

I have a suspicion it's coil whine, and your answers will help confirm it one way of or the other.

There are 3 typical components that can cause noises like that, the mobo, gpu and psu.

If its the gpu fans thats touching a wire then its more likely to be a scratching / rubbing sound and not a high pitch frequency.

The psu and motherboard's coils can in some scenarios make a whining sound when under a spesific amount of load. Experienced this on one of my Asus motherboards a little while back, and it was solved by changed the OC settings in the bios from "auto" to "D.C.O.P".

If its the psu, then its either aging, bad quality hardware or a small factory defect.

And beware that its very hard to actually hear where the sound is comming from, cause the sound often eccoes trough the case.

I got MSI Afterburner and played around with the fan speeds so the buzzing noise is not the fan. However turning on Vsync for one of the games causing the issue stopped the coil whine. However when I boot up another game (bioshock infinite) I get that buzzing sound which sounds different than the coil whine in game A. I get this sound regardless of whether Vsync is enabled or disabled. What does "D.C.O.P." Stand for and what would that do? I did take the side panel off and listen for where it was coming from and it appears to be the GPU. This system is a month old, all parts bought new. I do appreciate the advise by the way.

D.O.C.P, like XMP are bios overclocking profiles. I'v tried to look it up, but been unable to find out why changing this setting made the high pitch noise my rig made go away, all i know is that it did.

I have in rare encounters heard gpu's making a similare noise, but that was mainly when f.eks a game was opened and you where either in a intro "movie" or the menu. Now if i have understood correctly this is mainly caused by the game having a movie and menu "v-sync" intigrated that forced the gpu performance down in a way it dislikes.

But i'm guessing that thats not the case for you. You have this sound all the time while in those games, correct?

Yes correct, While in game I have that buzzing sound all the time and I have confirmed that it is not from the fans by turning the GPU fans up to 100% and listening.

Your experience sounds much like my own. I had coil whine on my card EVGA gtx 670 FTW when i first got it; it was audible particularly during benchmarking tests (like ungine heaven), and the first games I tried to play. Switching V-sync on on the games got rid of it though. It was particularly noticeable, at the time, on really graphically light games; the kind where it says you're getting over 1000 fps before you turn v-sync on.

I think the problem itself may have also decreased over time as well, as now, it's really only for the first minute or so of a benchmarking type program, and then it goes away (which coincides with a stabilizing of the card's power usage and GPU usage).

So, to sum things up; coil whine is sadly not that unusual with graphics cards in certain situations. If V-sync doesn't solve the problem, try turning on a frame limiter as well (via your favorite software program like afterburner); that can occasionally help. People have different opinions as to whether coil whine is a justified reason for an RMA; in my personal opinion, if it was substantially impacting my enjoyment and use of my card (it is a horrible sound after all) I would probably have to RMA it. Thankfully I didn't have to in my case, as V-sync took away virtually all the problems.

I'm not too sure about the particular noise you're hearing on Bioshock Infinite though, sadly...

i just applied new heat sink paste to my gtx 760 and on replacing the heat-sink and fan the wire from the fan to the board was just touching the fan. making a slight fast clicking noise. (could this be your problem ).
