So I've basically had this card for about 6 months and I've been running it in my rig ever since. I've never changed the thermal paste or overclocked it. The default settings on the bios has the fans on the cooler (ACX 2.0 cooler btw) to not start up until a certain temp. So this morning I decided to overclock it. While doing so I realised it was getting a bit uncomfortably hot (btw I have no air conditioning in my room yet and I live in the tropics) I changed the default settings on the fans so now they spin as soon as my pc starts up and it gives these temps:

While idle its around 36 deg cel. This is a good remp while fans are running since the ambient temp rn is 31 deg. (says siri)

The problem is when I run msi kombustor 3 (Gpu core burner furry donut) with default clocks My temps got to 90 deg cel. running it for 3 mins and then I shut my pc off. I really don't think this is normal.. Idk what to do can anyone help? All suggestions are welcome

Pc Specs:

i5 6600k Oc to 4.3ghz - hyper212 evo
Msi krait gaming 3X mobo
1 stick 8gb ddr4 corsair ballistix 2400mhz ram
Evga gtx 970 ssc
sentey xplus power 725w psu
and a pci wifi card

1 front intake fan
1 top intake fan
2 side intake fans (facing the gpu)
1 top exhaust fan
1 back exhaust fan

Please help! Sorry if it was alot of reading D:

i very much doubt you damaged your card. and it is a good card, im not sure why you say that it isnt. what are you temps in-game? thats what really counts.

also, id...

So basically I just played witcher 3 at high preset. for like 3 mins and it was reaching 80 deg cel.

Is this safe for my card for prolonged sessions of gaming?

How do I know if its throttling? While running heaven my gpu usage keeps dipping down and coming back up and its a 77 deg cel right now. But in gpuz the core clock doesn't really dip much, neither does the mem clock. The gpu usage shown in msi afteruburner dips alot tho. It keeps dipping and going back up too 99. its never on 100..

that's normal for the gpu usage. what is your core clock set at? the card will be throttling if it starts clocking down the core when things get warm.

sure look like you proving a lot here ?? lol... 80c is a normal on these card you see all over first thing was to look at what you really get with a 970 to start with as dumb as I am I know better then to risk / invest in to one

you but a new card that's not to your satisfaction and you sit there fooling around with it tearing it apart in the hopes you ''fix it'' then goof something as like you said now voids warrantee or something its a evga so they cross ship so with that all that as you put it ''unless you want to be without a GPU for some time'' maybe 3 days ? dang how many days has he got in fooling around hoping to make it work as he expects it to in stead of just running the card in enjoyment ??
now here you are talking about a new psu over a temp issue when the card is working as normal

get real

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qoTNF-FFJOI

but in the end heres the key thing said ''So this morning I decided to overclock it. While doing so I realised it was getting a bit uncomfortably hot ''

what did you expect ?? oc'ing is all your own risk and nothing is guaranteed - higher settings over factory = higher heat and stress on the card so cooling could become a issue [why do you think water blocks are high demand on theses 900 cards ?? ]

you done this to your self in the end its not the card evga and any manufacture only stands behind proper operation at there out of the box factory settings lol....the rest fall all on you

No No I didn't do anything to myself LOL
I never overclocked the card. I decided to yesterday. Correct. But I ran the benchmarks before overclocking and found that it went really hot ( 80+ deg )
Still up to this moment the only thing I've changed in this card was thermal paste and the fan spin curve. Never overclocked it..

The core clock is default. I didn't change it. In games the core clock is constant at 1392mhz And It'll be at 80 deg cel with the fans running at like 30-35%

TL;DR

Edit: i actually did read this cause its kind of obnoxious. anyways you won't void your warranty by replacing the cooler, thermal paste or overclocking. it's an EVGA card. they allow that. plus i stated very early in the thread he should get a new PSU. its common sense.i didnt say the card isnt working because of the PSU. chill out, dude. no need to get emotional over this.

anyways, try to be constructive. sounds more like you're just here to criticize and say "told ya so". no one likes that. if you're just here to start an argument or prove that you are the all-knowing computer person...move along now please

hey Jisann_ i think your card is working as it should. if it's constant 1392mhz then im pretty sure thats the rated boost out of the box. you can definitely stop worrying now. seems like it runs just like my gtx 970 which is also an EVGA acx 2.0

''anyways you won't void your warranty by replacing the cooler, thermal paste or overclocking. it's an EVGA card. they allow that. ''

never said you can?? but if you do damage wile doing all that then the tables turn like ya you can replace paste but if you get it in a spot that's not where paste should be that's end user abuse [got to remember some paste is conductive ] and you get it on something and causes a short that's all on you not them

all I see here is trying to fix something that aint broke and heading down hill in doing so

''1392mhz And It'll be at 80 deg cel with the fans running at like 30-35%'' well set the fand to be at 60-80% at them temps

heres a guy with a 960 like that

notice how its got way off base just like here [maybe sajin post on '' Lots of airflow '' is your best answer as well? ]

http://forums.evga.com/Is-37-fan-level-too-low-when-under-max-load-Hitting-80C-limit-with-my-new-GTX-960-SC-m2477231.aspx

good luck

So would you overclock it under my conditions?

yeah sure i'd see how it goes. set the temp target to like 80-85C. at that temperature target you're very unlikely to do any damage. worst than can happen is the card won't hit your desired clock speeds. i say go for it

So if I set the temp limit in msi afterburner to 85 deg. The card with begin to throttle down? Thats what the temp limit does?

one thing looking at your so called 725w psu is the 12v amps it shows here its just 48 amps ?? that's just barely over a 550w spec ?? 725w/12v = 60.41 amps

http://www.sentey.com/en/xpp-725-watts-xpp725-hs

looks like to me you got a 550w psu labeled as a 725w unit

[look at the 550w 12v rating ]

look at just a 700w psu

you invest in a known solid unit like these [850w/12v=70.83amps]

watts = the true amps output

evga makes some good units and great support if theres a issue with them also you get correct amps for the rated watts

I would prefer it well over the one you got now for sure ? hard for me to say I don't go less then a quality 750w myself on my primary gaming rigs [I use the seasonic 850w I linked above ]

maybe dangus will chime back in with a opinion ??

i really need to know your budget before i can tell you which to get

that EVGA 600B is a very solid PSU. the 500watt version got solid marks on jonnyguru.com (who also works for Corsair and helps them with their power supplies). there are definitely better units out there but i just yesterday built a system for someone with the EVGA 500B in it and was very impressed with the build quality for such a low price PSU.

the more you want to oc parts the more you want psu overhead to cover running at full load power draw see heres how I could look at things

your chip oced 125w [91w out of the box] your card 325w oced [from round a bout review max power draw rating full load 323w] = 450w = 37.5 amps then add 10 amps for the rest of the system that's now 47.5 amps .. yopur psu at max is just showing 48amps [if now you can trust that's even true ??]

so to me I would at least get something with true to watts 55 -60 amp range so you can see how easy that's can be chewed up and where I say at least a quality 750w psu with a 60 amp >< rating [opinion]

Okay so it's settled then. I'll get that psu asap and I'll turn off my cpu oc to kinda cut back on power so my pc won't get ruined LOL. And I guess I was over reacting about my card. I'll just crank the fan speed to about 40% since at 50% it goes to 2500 rpm and at 2500-3000rpm it gets alot loud. So I guess all I need is a psu and I'll be good 😀 Thanks everyone for helping out. The is like my first time posting on this site btw 😀

thing is with these electronics there aint no telling with out a means of trial and test you could still do all that and be no better off in the end ??

luck of the draw and all play a bigger part in todays stuff then ever before heck my last build was a mess and never got satisfied seemed like all ways something with it . with it but this build cant complain alls good and no mess no fuss works as expected one of my last vid cards was just a lemon just poor all around replaced it with a lesser card that did 10x better job and way cooler ??

a lot of lemons out there today

you're lucky to have gotten guys like junkeymonkey and i for your first post. sometimes people on here are not really motivated to help or explain things to people that may not know as much as they do. i've had many problems where i wanted some feedback but the thread just goes dead with no one interested in helping out. other times it can turn into one-upmanship where people just want to show you how much they know instead of being truly helpful. i definitely don't know everything about computers but i'm sure willing to help if i can! glad your first post is a good experience.
