I guess the writer forgot that decibels are logarithmic and SNR 123dB compared to SNR of 120 dB is actually twice as good. I wouldn't call 100% difference "marginal" by any means.

Two times nothing is still nothing though isn't it? :)

A bit too easy to cheat on SNR testing as well. A digital amp can recognise when there is no input signal and just suppress the output. So it's not always a good indicator of the actual sound quality.
