That $3K price tag is a bit hard to swallow when I could buy an MSI GS60 for 1/2 the cost and has pretty similar specs. I get where people are coming from with a 4K 17" display on a laptop being too small. But what I'm curious about is how it translates to battery life. Does having a Samsung 950 Pro as the primary automatically mean a longer battery life? Or will the average use time be about 2 hours?

I agree on PSUs, the G2/P2/T2 are the only units I'll consider buying for the time being, with Seasonic X being a close second.

An SSD won't make much difference on the battery life. Most high end laptops have an SSD anyways so it's a similar comparison. The battery life is mostly greater now because of the more efficient processors from Intel. They've done great things for efficiency. What the SSD adds aside from speed is reliability. The shock proof nature of solid state makes it great for laptops.

Yeah that is one thing is that the power on laptops is getting better with each generation. My Lenovo right now (i7-3630QM) barely gets about 2 and a half hours on a full charge. My old Toshiba got about a little over an hour. I'd be curious to know what the current generation gets in terms of battery life.
