I own a Z170 FTW mb and i would like to replace my CPU , i currently have a i7 6700 .
What’s the best cpu can i get with that mb?

Example: the new 8700k need a 300 series mb compatibility.. How can I know if my z170 ftw is compatible? I did some research and cant find. I need help guys...

You actually find your answer already; the 8700k needs a 300-series motherboard. You don't have a 300-series motherboard, you have a 1000-series motherboard, so an 8700k is incompatible. Some people have figured out a BIOS mod to get it sort of working, but it's not a real option right now.

z170 motherboards are compatible with Skylake CPUs out of the box and Kaby Lake CPUs if you are able to update the BIOS beforehand. But if you have a 6700, it doesn't make a lot of sense to upgrade to anything that runs on your motherboard.

There's nothing better on this motherboard except a 6700k/7700k, which are marginal upgrades when you already have a 6700. Nor would buying a whole new motherboard just for the extra cores of an 8700k be a good use of money.

No, the problem is it's only a good purchase if you have a specific workload that can take advantage of 16+ cores. If you don't, you're literally paying an extra $1000 for nothing.

So if i understand corectly, a 6700 is plenty enough for any game ? Im basically gaming

Yes, it's fine. And when the day comes that it isn't fine, so would anything else avaialble on this motherboard.
