Yo.

Had this motherboard for a few years now, works great at 3.8-4.1GHZ with a Core i7 920 D0.

I will be doing a lot of FEA and modelling this coming year, and I want to use a hex-core CPU.

The 970/980/990 will all work, according to Gigabyte, and they're Gulftown 6 core 32nm.

Will a Xeon X5660 also work in it? It's not listed as compatible, but it's the same CPU, just a different name. IF YES - DOES ANYONE HAVE PROOF?

Thanks.

Solution
Yes it does.

Sorry, should have written earlier.

I am using the newest BIOS for the board, I believe it's FK.

The only issue I have is the RAM multiplier seems stuck at 8 but I just brought the bclk to 200*8 and then I can run my ram at 1600.

All cores work, turbo and speedstep all work too. All voltages set to auto except ram, then clrcmos and away you go!

The chip seems an honest 50% faster for multithreaded workload, and while I haven't had the time to overclock systematically, I can hit 4ghz already.
FEA and modelling = all night coffee and Assassin's Creed session. Sorry dude 😉 Hope somebody can give you the answer you need.

Note to mods: I'm not just trolling, I know the OP in real life.

Did it work? I am very interested.

I am hitching my wagon to yours. I am going to use my older pc just set up like yours. It has been collecting dust since I have been playing with xeon e3 1265L.

The other pc does nothing at all. I got another pc as NAS. I was going to use my Ex58-UD3R as a NAS system and load it up with a low powered xeon but now i am thinking to go your way. Thanks for the update.

Keep me updated, dude. I got mine to 4GHz, around 1.33V core/uncore, but then instability crept in later. I am having my PSU checked out, as I measured loads of noise on it's 12V line; but there's is also the possibility that the motherboard voltage regulation wasn't good enough to go higher.

I'm over on overclock.net with the same username, the big Xeon thread Kana-Maru started is where the action is at.
