Hi,

Looking to get the best out of my 11 yr old son's setup... he's enjoying Avatar Frontiers of Pandora but getting frustrated with the low FPS (sub 30) and lagging... any suggestions on improving this?

My/His system spec is:
MBD: Gigabyte GA-B550 GAMING X V2
CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600G
GPU: NVidia GTX 1080
SSD: Samsung 980 Pro M.2 NVMe
RAM: Corsair Vengeance RGB PRO DDR4 3200 C16 2x8GB

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5800x3D
GPU: NVidia GTX 4070 or equivalent from AMD.
RAM 2x16GB DDR4 at 3600mHz.
That should more than double capabilities without changing everything and last for good a while.

5700X3D is also an option.

You did not list a PSU, that is an important factor in deciding a GPU upgrade. The GTX1080 was quite efficient for its day, newer cards are efficient as well, but also have far higher power demands.

You can get a lot more performance per dollar out of an AMD RX6800 and its 16GB VRAM, which seems important to this particular game at higher settings.

RTX 4070 at $540
RTX 4070 Super at $580 (A much better deal than the 4070, about 90% of a 4070 Ti)

RX6800 at $360
RX7700XT at $390

See here for performance comparisons, there are a few cards missing but the RX 6800 would fall behind the 6800XT and the 4070 Super should be above the RTX 3080 10GB and perhaps above the RTX 3090:

GTX 1080 is around the RX6600 in terms of performance.

Thanks - however I'm looking to see what we can do with the current setup - he has zero budget!

You could try lowering the settings and enabling FSR so that you are upscaling a lower resolution rather than rendering natively.

Try to get the game under 8GB of VRAM by stripping out less important features like shadow detail and dropping the textures down a notch.

It appears that the system is just at/over the minimum system requirements for 30FPS. This must be quite the graphics.

You could try to run the res down to 720 at minimum just to get a ballpark idea of FPS, then add back a little eye candy if there is room in the performance for said.

Start with the free stuff.

Give the innards a good cleaning......heatsinks/fans/filters nice and clean...test.

Update the bios....test.

Update drivers....test.

Verify ram is running at 3200.
