Explain Dual vs. Single Channel

I've been out of the upgrade business for a few years and am confused by this whole dual vs. single channel thing I keep hearing about.

1) What does dual channel mean?
2) What is the difference from the old single channel technology?
3) What are the advantages/features of dual channel?
4) How do I know if I have it on a new PC?
5) How do I take full advantage of it?
