earlier i created a new partition from C drive and moved my data into it.Without knowing the consequences. When i reinstalled my windows i lost that partition with data. Now again i thought not to create a new partition and extend the existing partition D.Now my question is that when i will reinstall my windows will i lost my files from the extended D drive.i have not moved anything into it.Plzzzzzzzzz tell me.Thank You !!!!!!!!!

Rule#1 - never have important data on just 1 device. <-- learn this, live this.
Rule#2 - make sure your backup copy is a good copy when you've made it.

A backup is an extra copy of a file, not your only copy. I prefer to make at least 2 backup copies since having my main hdd die would leave my backup copy being the 'only copy' and thus violating Rule#1.

Now given this wisdom, burn your backup files to dvd or usb drive of your choosing. Then you can copy it to D; if you wish and it wont matter if windows install erases D: because all you have to do is copy it back in again.

btw, windows (you didnt mention which version) shouldnt touch your d: drive unless you tell it to

No No No !!!! I am Asking that will it remove data on reinstalling windows.I am on win 7 and i used disk manager of windows to extend D drive. And thank u for your answer. However I RE MENTION that i have extended D drive space by disk mananger of windows ANd HEREby I am worried that if i move data into it and reinstall windows then on installing C drive may take its space back from D drive deleting my data. Plzzzzz tell,I am waiting for answer.

Your description of your present situation is very confusing.

You keep referring to a "D drive" that you've "extended". I assume you're working with a single hard drive (HDD) and your objective is to create two partitions on that HDD - one to contain your OS, and another to contain your program data. So that the two partitions will bear the drive letter assignments of C:\ & D:\. Do I have this right?

If so, you create the first partition to house your Win 7 OS. You size the partition according to whatever size you want keeping in mind the size of the second partition that you will be creating.

But do you really need two partitions on your single HDD? Why not consider creating a single partition (C:\) encompassing the total disk-space of your HDD which will contain both your OS & all the rest of your data?

As popatim has suggested, your concern should be maintaining comprehensive backups of your TOTAL system using a disk-cloning program or some other type of comprehensive backup system.

In any event, clearly explain the precise present configuration of your HDD. Have two partitions been created on that disk? Or only a single partition? And does the latter currently contain all your data that you don't want to lose?

Report the total size of your HDD and the size of the partition(s). Also, what is the size of your total data residing on a partition.

Does the HDD boot at all?

I already said it wont touch D: unless you give it permission to, and yes you can give it permission to by clicking "ok" or "Next" and not knowing what you just did..., but your concern over the issue tells me you dont have a backup and therefore what you want to do should be the last thing you do.

Make your backups before something bad happens and you lose it all. Please.
