External drive disconnecting and reconnecting

Hi I just got a new laptop, specifically Asus rog G550JX. It has three USB 3.0 ports. I connected my external hard drive to it and it worked well for a few hours. However, after that few hours, the external hard drive just disconnected when I was playing a video from it. The disconnected chime from windows 8.1 played. After around 1 sec, the drive reconnected and windows explorer opened due to the Autoplay. This is weird as I have never encountered any disconnnection when I connected my external hard drive to my old laptop which runs on windows 7. This new laptop G550JX runs on windows 8.1.

So my question is: is this disconnection/reconnection a problem on windows 8.1?

I just don't want this to happen too often because it will corrupt the drive. Anyone with similar problems? Thanks for any advice!

Hi there jshthng,

It may be a good idea to check whether this is some sort of a connection related issue. So, you need to try using a different USB cable and a different USB port.(try all of them)
Is the drive recognized by another computer? In case it is, you can just back up the most important data stored on it until you sort this out.
If the issue persists after double checking the connections, you can go to your laptop's website and update/reinstall your USB 3.0 drivers.
