I was looking at getting a better graphics card for my laptop when I discovered that laptops have very crummy graphics card upgrades. I decided to get an external PC graphics card for my laptop and the purpose for this upgrade is that I cannot run certain programs like Autodesk Maya and cannot get good frame-rates on games like Dark Souls and Space Engineers.

I am going to be using a EVGA GeForce GTX 760 Super Clocked ACX 2GB GDDR5 SLI Ready Graphics Card powered by a 485 w power supply. I will be storing these components in a empty Silverstone SG05-LITE Black Cube Case.

The overall cost of all the components minus the graphics card is around $125 and since I am buying the graphics card for $125 it brings the total amount up to $250.

I know I could sell my laptop and buy a brand new PC, but I don't want to do that because I don't have a permanent place for my computer to stay and am constantly moving around my house. The nice thing about having a mostly empty PC case is that it will be fairly light to carry around. My question is: Will this upgrade be a good idea in terms of cost and productivity?

A laptop + external GPU + power supply for the GPU = a crappy, expensive desktop.
It is not portable anymore.

Unless I'm mistaken, the mini-PCI-E slot is limited to an x1 throughput. Imagine the performance degradation when installing that GTX 760 into a standard motherboard's PCI-Ex1 slot. That's what you can expect from this set up. This is the main reason external GPU adapters have never really hit the market.
