Hello everyone,

I do hope someone will be able to help me with my current situation, as I have a lot of important documents on my HDD. I've tried all sort of methods, from using various of recovery software, plugging it on different PC, restart PC/HDD, using different cable, booting PC into safe mode, disk management, device manager, regedit, trying to access it in CMD, using chkdsk and many other stuff, but it did not work.

Here is my issue. When I plugged in my HDD cable into the USB port, after a few seconds you hear the USB connected sound effect, when I open This PC(My Computer), and right click to refresh it, I get to see my physical drive, but it doesnt have any information like the disk space available and the green ribbon will be loading and it just loads forever. When I go to disk management, it will load forever as well, as though it is trying to access the HDD but it is not able to.

Can anyone please help me with my current situation, I've loss enough hair on this matter. Any solution is welcomed. Please do let me know if there are anymore information required from this case. Thank you so much in advance everyone.

This is my HDD specification:
WD Elements
P/N: WDBAAU0020HBK-01

This is my PC's specification:
Windows 8.1
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4720HQ CPU @ 2.60Ghz 2.59 Ghz
Installed Memory (RAM): 8.00 (7.89 GB usable)
System type: 64-bit Operating System, x64-based processor

Hey there again, @mleecf!

I'm sorry for the late reply. I'd strongly recommend you consider my suggestion about the professional data recovery company assistance. Any other software would put additional stress on the failing drive. This is very dangerous, especially if the files on it are of high importance to you.
I'd definitely consider a professional data recovery company to be the first priority here. Check the WD Partners worldwide in the link from my previous post.

Best of luck! Sorry I couldn't be more helpful! 🙁

Welcome to the community, @mleecf!

I'm truly sorry to hear about your issues with the WD Elements. 🙁 It seems like you might be dealing with a failed HDD. If the drive is still unresponsive after the USB cable swap and it's performing the same way on another system, you should definitely try running the QUICK and EXTENDED tests from WD's Data LifeGuard Diagnostics for Windows. It will help us determine the health and SMART status of the WD Elements.

I'd also advise you to check the warranty status of the external on our website.

However, if the data on the HDD is so important to you, you should definitely consider contacting one of our Data Recovery Partners. They are your best bet on getting those files back. In the future, always remember that "backup" means that you have your data stored in at least two (2) locations. Moving data from your system drive to an external hard drive is not a backup, unless there is already a duplicate of the file on a different drive.

Hope this helps. Keep me posted!

Hey there,

I've check on the site, my warranty is out. I've the methods you have suggested, such as the WD's Data LifeGuard Diagnostics for Windows, since it is still loading, when i try to use that or any other recovery software, it hangs the program. Does anyone else has any similar experiences?

Thank you.
