External Hard drive as secondary drive

I am currently using a 250gb Samsung 840 SSD but need extra storage. Will a external hard drive give good enough speeds if its in a usb 3 slot? or should i buy a internal hdd?

What are you going to be using the external drive for?

If will be used mainly for backup/ data storage then a USB 3.0 external drive will be just fine.

If you will be doing graphics editing or game installations onto the external drive you might consider getting an internal HDD for better read/write times.

Ill be using it for games so I will get aa internal.
