My external hard drive is showing an error.

G:\ is not accessible.

The disk structure is corrupted and unreadable.

Does anyone know how to fix it without formatting it? Have a lot of file on there that I'd like to recover if possible.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Solution
You begin with having another drive to recover the files to. Then you run recovery software on the drive like Recuva, Testdisk,...
If the drive is making unusual (not-normal) noises, then stop using it immediately. Noise is most often associated with a hardware failure and if you really need the data on it you will need to send it out.
