I recently had issues where my laptop (and any other computer I hooked it up to) wouldn't be able to detect my Maxtor External Hard Drive. I have had this rive for almost 10 years, since the year 2007. Usually its always been plugged in and running even when it wasn't hooked up to my computer or when I powered down my computer (note, when I say computer I always mean a laptop, I've had three total that have been hooked up to this external hard drive, a Compaq Presario, a Toshiba Satellite L350 Series, and most recently a HP Pavilion g7-1310us Notebook PC).
For a few years, this Maxtor External Hard Drive would start to freeze up what ever laptop it was hooked up to that I would have to unplug the USB cable from the hard drive and unplug it from the power outlet to free up and unfreeze the laptop which always work, including most recently. A few days ago this External Hard Drive officially pretty much died and wasn't detectable by any computer or laptop its been connected to. I have a new External Hard Drive and I've been attempting to transfer everything from the Maxtor External Hard Drive to the new one, a few of the programs and files were transferred to my laptop's desktop to be transferred over before the hard drive wasn't being detected anymore but not all of them.
Last week I purchased on Amazon a USB2.0 To SATA/IDE set to transfer the files off the External Hard Drive if it came to this point where the problem with the Maxtor External Hard Drive got to the point nothing could read it. I've tried learning how to use this set with an old defective hard drives but these tests failed and I figured it was due to the damage/defects they had.
Yesterday (July 31) one of my friends got my Maxtor External Hard Drive apart (as in out of its casing) and I've tried to use the USB2.0 To SATA/IDE set with it but it's not working; I think I'm having problems with it. I've tried connecting it to the Maxtor hard drive to the set's slot for it and the power part to the correct spot, but when connecting the power cord's 4-pin connector to the hard drive it doesn't work instead I get a burnt rubber like smell and some smoke when removing the power supply. So I'm not going to attempt it again until I know what is causing that. The problem is I still need the rest of the files and programs on this old Maxtor External Hard Drive since there are no other backups of these files since in reality, this Maxtor Hard Drive was their backups but then I also started using it as direct storage to save hard drive space on my HP Pavilion g7-1310us Notebook PC. Looking at this Maxtor Hard Drive, I've found out that it is an Ultra ATA and also says PATA instead of SATA and I'm not 100% sure if that is what is the cause of all my problems I am having and why it started smelling like burnt rubber and had that smoke coming from it.
I've taken pictures of this External Hard Drive as well as of the USB2.0 To SATA/IDE set:
