Pc specs:

Windows 11
Cpu: i7-9700 GPU
Gpu: Nvidia GTX 1660
Ram: 16GB
Storage: 1x 1TB SSD M.2 2x 2TB HHD SATA 1x 500GB SSD SATA
Psu: Asus Prime 750B-Black 750W 80+ Bronze
Motherboard Asus
Outputs: 2 x USB 3.0, 3X USB 2.0

Whenever I try to connect either a HDD or an SSD to my PC, the light on the drive comes on for a second or so then goes off and the PC gives me the sound notification of a device being connected then disconnected, cycling on and on. Essentially it's like if I was constantly connecting and disconnecting the drives. This issue only started a short while ago, for several years there was no issues (with the same drives).

This issue doesn't arise when using Usb keys and all the drives work fine on other PC's.

To me, this points out to a power issue at the usb outputs but I've recently upgraded my power supply from 450W to a new 750W one and the issue persists so I'm at a loss at this point.

Does anyone have any suggestion? Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the forums, newcomer!

Motherboard Asus
Asus is the brand of the motherboard, what is the model of the motherboard? What BIOS version are you on for your motherboard?

Please elaborate. Are you connecting said drives using a USB driven dock? Or are you referring to them connected using the SATA ports on your motherboard?

What was the make, model and age of the 450W unit you had prior?

Thanks for the reply.

which external storage devices exactly are you trying to connect ?
-Toshiba and Western Digital HDD's, Sandisk SSD

some do need a second USB port to get enough power.
- They all previously worked on the exact same system without needing a 2nd USB port
Sdifferent cables tried?
Yes
USB 3 and USB 2 tried?
Yes
Did you try the back or/and frontpanel USB ports?
Yes

Thanks for your reply.

I am away from that PC for a couple of days, I'll need to check on the model and the BIOS version and get back to you.

I'm not sure I understand your question. The drives are standard external drives and they connect to the USB inputs on the PC case.

Some unknown Chinese brand (no markings on the unit), 5 years old.

Again, thanks for the reply, I'll get back to you asap re. motherboard.

Just to get it out of the mix.
Device mgr/usb controllers.
Look through the properties of each entry for a power option.
Disable the allow option.

Also in the power plan there is a usb selective suspend option.
Disable that.
