External Harddrive will not work with Windows 8

My external hardrive will not work since I got my new laptop running windows 8. Every time I plug it in the lap top wants to format the drive. How do I get my images and movies off the external drive without formatting it?

First things first. Don't format it. Can you see the files on that drive on any other computer? On a computer running a different OS?
We want to see if this is a Win8 issue or a bad drive or what.
Also, if you get it running on another machine, use the Disk Mangler to show what filesystem it is formatted with.
And we will go from there.
