I have removed my external hard drive & brought it to a different PC, I have done this countless times previously with the hard drive, moving it & saving work to it etc etc & now this morning it won't mount - get this pop up message when trying in linux;

Error mounting /dev/sdb1 at /media/blueinca99/B238426A38422E23: Command-line `mount -t "ntfs" -o "uhelper=udisks2,nodev,nosuid,uid=1000,gid=1000,dmask=0077,fmask=0177" "/dev/sdb1" "/media/blueinca99/B238426A38422E23"' exited with non-zero exit status 13: ntfs_attr_pread_i: ntfs_pread failed: Input/output error

NTFS is either inconsistent, or there is a hardware fault, or it's a
SoftRAID/FakeRAID hardware. In the first case run chkdsk /f on Windows
then reboot into Windows twice. The usage of the /f parameter is very
important! If the device is a SoftRAID/FakeRAID then first activate
it and mount a different device under the /dev/mapper/ directory, (e.g.
/dev/mapper/nvidia_eahaabcc1). Please see the 'dmraid' documentation
for more details.

When connected using Windows 10 file manager just scrolls over endlessly, noting 'application is not responding'.

I am really struggling with this one. Anyone have some ideas before I go down the path of data/file recovery? Many thanks in advance for any replies.

If the drive is not seen in any computer, try a different cable, try removing the drive from the enclosure and see if it's seen in another enclosure or directly on a SATA cable in a desktop. As long as the drive is not one of those with a custom connector or has onboard encryption, those are pretty much impossible to work with outside the case.
