I bought a Samsung Portable T1 External SSD for my laptop. It requires USB 3.0, which I have but when I use it, it reads/writes at the same speed as my default hard drive, maybe even slower.

I have a TOSHIBA Satellite C44D-B with a AMD A8 6410 APU and AMD Radeon R5 graphics, 8gb of RAM.

Welcome to the community, Jack!

I'd recommend you to go to your laptop manufacturer's website and re-install the USB 3.0 hub drivers for your model. Just make sure they are up-to-date and then try the external SSD once again. If you have access to another computer, try plugging the drive there and check its speed rate. It's possible that the cable itself is faulty, so I'd also find another USB 3.0 cable to test the drive with.

Give these a try and let me know how it goes! Best of luck! :)
