Hey guys, I need some advice.

I'll be getting my xps 15 in a few days and just had a question regarding what would be the best type of storage for what I want. This will be my primary computer for the next years to come, but one of the main things I'll be doing with the machine is to record video game play for speedrunning. The model I got has a 512 ssd, but I've read that I could get a smaller battery and add another hard drive of some sort if I wanted. Would I be better off just getting a external ssd or hdd instead? Some suggestions would be great. Thanks

Here's one of the external hdd's I was looking at.

if you change the battery you surely loose warranty on the laptop

if you plan to save and edit lots of videos it is better to get a decent external storage

you can also change the ssd for another one, 1 tb when available and with a decent price

Yes, I plan to save the video, so maybe external is a better option? Do you mean buy an internal ssd to replace the one that comes with computer? Wouldnt that void warrenty as well or does that usually just apply to batteries?

Also, what do I lose from using an external drive so store my files? Is the only downside just having to move them back an forth?

on some models the ssd is not covered by the warranty as the battery, but you would need to confirm that with dell specifically, since the battery is manufactured by dell and not user replaceable

in my case i can replace battery but the hard disk has a big warranty seal over the screw, so each manufacturer does things diferently

external storage doesn't require you to discover if you can keep or loose the warranty

Oh ok. I understand. I'm looking into it atm. If I'm able to do it with out voiding warrenty, would you recommend that over external? And if you do could you recommend a few internal ssds for replacement that would fit in the computer? Thanks much.

Well I'd like to avoid buying the wrong thing compatibility wise in the first place, thats why I'm asking experts like you 😛.

If I can't get an internal ssd for some reason, I guess I will just have to go with an external hdd

Can you link me a good 1tb ssd that would fit in my model ( it has gtx 1050 anyways). I'm not actually going to be doing any gaming on it anyway, ill be recording via capture card.
Cheers

hitachi hgst or toshiba, get a 2 tb unit

about experts, well, as you see there is two different configurations known(surely more), so no idea what you will get and as i mentioned, the warranty on some countries and on some models apply different

Hey, random question on the fly. Would I be able to record gameplay on the fly to a external hdd connected via usb??

How can I find this out? Will it say in the specs description??

I'll be using a capture card to record gameplay from old consoles like n64, nes, snes etc. I'll be using obs to record
