Everytime I plug in my external hard drive into the computer, it begins beeping. It wont be recognized. It's a WD 1 TB. Please help, it has all of my data on it.

Ive tried plugging it into another laptop. (nothing).

Yes, it just fell recently about 3 feet off of the top of my desktop onto the carpet. Regardless, it;'s still beeping. It's about four years old but has been working solid with no hitches at all. Also I ran test disk and it didn't come up with any errors for the hard drive.

It sounds like the fall might have damaged the internal components of the drive. 🙁

If the drive is physically damaged I'm afraid there is very little we can do to help you. You can try to run a scan on the drive using WD Data Lifeguard, but if the drive is not even being recognized by your system this isn't an option.

If you had critical data on your drive you might have to seek the services of a 3rd party data recovery company. They are rather expensive though, so the data would have to be quite valuable to justify the cost.

Here is a link to the WD data recovery site, which lists all official WD Data Recovery partners: http://support.wdc.com/Warranty/dataRecovery.aspx

How expensive exactly?

That will depend on the company you use, each will probably quote a slightly different price. It can cost hundreds of dollars though.

If you're interested in specific quotes the link I posted above for WD Data Recovery has listings for individual companies you can contact.

Hi there EllieBunnyKiller,

Sorry that you are facing some issues with your WD drive. 🙁
Sometimes, beeping could be caused by faulty cable. This is why, you can try using a different cable.
In case the issue persists though, I guess there is something wrong with the enclosure or the HDD itself. Most probably the HDD got damaged from the fall.

In case the data is really important, you will need to contact a data recovery company. You can check WD's Data Recovery partners as Luminary already suggested.
Generally, the data recovery services are pricey. Yet, you will need to contact the specific company in order to get a clearer picture of how much this will cost.
