Hey guys,
I recently purchased a GTX 1060 to replace my old 750 ti anyway whenever I'm playing games I can run most games on high-ultra 60fps easily but a lot of the time I start to get extreme stutter and usually freezing of my games that can last up to 1 minute, I have no idea what the cause for this is as I never really experienced it on my 750 ti.
One Idea that I have for this is my PSU... I have an old 650w ultra PSU that I've had for years... Thinking that it could be delivering some falty voltages to my CPU and GPU? my reason for thinking this is the cause for getting this stutter/freezing is the usage on both my GPU and CPU drop at the same time, my CPU usage can go as low as 4% but will usually drop from like 90% down to 50% when I stutter/freeze then my GPU will go from 90% to around 15% when I stutter/freeze. Was thinking this could be caused by voltages being wack because it usually happens when my GPU and CPU start to get under load.
Specs:
i5 4690k @ 4.3Ghz
Evga GTX 1060 @ 1500Mhz with a +185Mhz overclock on core and +600Mhz overclock on VRAM
2x4gb DDR3 kingston hyperX fury black 1600Mhz
PSU old 650w ultra unit
Kingston 240GB SSD
Seagate 1TB HDD
Hyper 212 evo on CPU
-----------------------------------------------
Just so you know this isn't due to thermals, I manually cranked GPU fan speeds up to 100% so I could see if it was the temps and I would still stutter/freeze with a max temp on GPU of 51 Celsius and a max temp on CPU of 59 Celsius. Lowering graphics quality in the games does absolutely nothing as the usage on GPU and CPU still drop causing me to lag, or vice versa.
Some examples of games this happens in are:
The division
ARK
Rust
Games that are fine:
h1z1 (Ultra preset)
Rocket league (Ultra preset)
Deus ex: MD (High-ultra preset)
-----------------------------------------------
Also wanted to note that all my overclocks are stable, CPU can handle Prime95 for 3 hours with 90 celcius max (Prime95 is obviously unrealistic) and my GPU can run Unigine heaven 4.0 on ultra pre-set with no lag at all. I'm kind of thinking this is CPU bound but that doesn't make sense because other people with this CPU and a 1060 are playing games fine with a high minimum FPS and a fine average, leading me to believe this issue is caused by power delivery (but dont worry guys I think I'm getting an EVGA 750w 80+ Gold GQ in april so it's all good) just wondering if that is the issue, also don't think it's ram because I had the same ram in my 750ti rig and it worked fine. Just kind it kind of weird that this stutter/freezing only happens in some games and not all, but it definitely happens when my CPU and GPU both get under heavy load it's like it will reduce their performance causing the game to lag, really killing my immersion
